Practical Family Law Mediation in Florida
Is Mediation Right for Your Situation?
Family mediation works best when both people are willing to participate, even if they strongly disagree on the outcome. At Johnston Mediations, the focus is simple: create a structured environment where decisions can be made with clarity, not under pressure. You stay in control of the outcome. The process just helps you get there.
This approach is often a strong fit for divorce discussions, parenting plans, child support decisions, and the division of shared assets. It also works across a wide range of family structures, including married couples, unmarried partners, and LGBTQ+ families. Family law mediation in Florida is designed to support real-life situations, not ideal ones.
You don’t need perfect communication to start. You just need a willingness to engage in the process. That said, mediation may not be the right fit if one person refuses to participate or is not open to discussion. When both parties are willing, even slightly, progress is often possible.
What Happens If You Can’t Agree?
If you don’t reach a full agreement, you’re not stuck, and you’re not starting over. Family mediation is a voluntary process. You are never locked into decisions that don’t work for you. If needed, you can still move forward through the court system.
But here’s where mediation still delivers value: partial agreements. Resolving even a few issues, such as parenting schedules or specific financial details, can significantly reduce the time, cost, and complexity of litigation later. It gives you a clearer path forward instead of starting from zero. At Johnston Mediations, sessions are guided with structure and real-world insight. With a background in over 200 trials, the process isn’t just about discussion. It’s about helping you understand what’s realistic before investing more time and money elsewhere.
What To Expect From Family Law Mediation Sessions
Most clients don’t know what to expect going in; that’s normal. Family law mediation at Johnston Mediations is designed to be straightforward and controlled from the start. Sessions begin with a short, structured introduction that explains how discussions will be handled and how time will be used. From there, each person shares their perspective from their private virtual room.
Because sessions are conducted virtually across Florida, you have options. Many sessions are conducted in separate breakout rooms so that communication can occur without confrontation. You don’t need everything figured out before you start. The process is built to help you work through decisions step by step, with guidance grounded in real courtroom experience.
Ready To Move Forward With Clarity
If you’re looking for a more practical alternative to court, family mediation offers a structured way to resolve difficult issues without unnecessary conflict. Whether you are resolving disputes within an active lawsuit or seeking a path forward through the legal process, work with Johnston Mediations to move toward agreements that actually fit your life, not just something imposed from the outside.
Schedule your session today and start working toward a resolution you can stand behind.
The Process
Family mediation is not one size fits all.  Your situation is unique and deserves an individualized approach.  We can mediate any or all of the following:
- Parenting Time
- Dividing Marital Assets
- Spousal Maintenance
- Child Support
- Paternity
- Anything else that needs to be resolved
Sometimes parties reach a full agreement in one mediation. Â Other times, parties reach a partial agreement and may need multiple sessions to agree on all of the issues. Â The key to mediation is that you (not a judge) decide if you reach an agreement and what terms you agree to. Â No pressure.
Reaching an Agreement
Mediation is conducted online by Zoom teleconference.  All you need is a stable Internet connection, a private space and a cup of coffee.  Parties each join the mediation in their own private room — with their lawyer or by themselves if they don’t have a lawyer.  They decide which issues they want to discuss and how they want to approach them.  The mediator acts as a sounding board and a facilitator of discussion.  The mediator delivers proposed settlement offers by moving between the virtual rooms. This process protects the parties from having to deal directly with each other unless they want to.
Creative and Practical Solutions
Family law gives the parties the flexibility to make decisions that work best for them.  Because every situation is different, we can be creative and reach agreements that are right for your unique situation.  When people are making major life changes, it’s important to make sure that the agreements arrived at are tailored to what the parties want and need.
